Learning About Neglect Event Series – Webinar 8 – Educational neglect and what the numbers say

Published: 13 March 2025

CPC Scotland, with support from CELCIS and the Scottish Government, continues to deliver the ‘Learning About Neglect’ webinar series, with the next event taking place on Thursday 13 March.

Our final webinar in the current series will focus on the challenges of working with children and their families who may be absent from school for a variety of reasons and who may be at risk of neglect and requiring support, but not visible to services – an issue which seems to have grown since the COVID-19 pandemic. This online event will examine key data insights and explore practice changes within a local authority following a young person’s school non-attendance, highlighting its impact on the young person and lessons for practitioners.

Attendees will hear about:

  • The changing data around school attendance and what factors may be influencing this, and gaps in the current data
  • The potential impact on children and young people who may be absent from school for lengthy periods
  • What services can do collectively, from a GIRFEC perspective, and the positive impact this can bring
  • Learning from a situation of high risk

Our speakers are:

  • Dr Alex McTier, Evidence and Evaluation Specialist, CELCIS
  • Gillian Carroll, Children’s Services Planning and Performance Lead Officer, South Ayrshire Council
  • Ian Leishman, Inclusion Coordinator, South Ayrshire Council
